The Zi-2.2 gauge for crack monitoring

(Tell-Tale Pro)

Kit of 10 pieces + extra parts and tools

The suggested methods of installation

(text of video instruction)

The professional gauge for crack monitoring ZI – 2.2 is used for the monitoring of the spatial position of building constructions and the observation of their damage.

You will learn the following information from this informational video:

  • Features of the ZI-2.2 design
  • How to compensate for uneven surfaces when attaching the ZI-2.2
  • Pre-assembling the ZI – 2.2 monitor with assembly screws and proper spacer
  • Installing the ZI-2.2 crack monitor gauge with anti-vandal wall anchors.
  • Using the included hole marking template to properly position the ZI-2.2 monitor
  • Optional opportunity to affix the ZI-2.2 with assembly glue at a subzero temperature
  • The width of crack opening
  • Its length
  • Its location
  • The size of a shift along the crack and from the plane of a construction

The cracks of building constructions are estimated and analyzed according to the following characteristics:

Also the other characteristics can be important, see instructional video for to clarify.

For quality installation of the ZI-2.2, measure the size of the relative wall shift of the construction parts separated by a crack. This includes measuring the depth difference from one side of the crack to the adjacent side of the crack. This measurement is taken with the help of a ruler or a caliper to within 1 mm (1 millimeter). The measured depth of a shift of wall surface planes can be compensated by additional adhesive backed spacers when installing the ZI-2.2. There are (3) different thickness of adhesive backed spacers included for each ZI-2.2 (there is a total of (15) spacers in each kit of five gauges). These adhesive backed spacers are 1mm. 2mm and 3mm. They are conveniently applied by removing the paper back of the appropriate thickness spacer and applying it to the ends of the “index” and “scale” parts of the ZI-2.2 making sure the (2) holes that will be used for mounting are lined up perfectly. These spacers will keep the gauge away from the wall and will also be used to compensate for plane deflection depth from one side of the subject crack to the adjacent side. The main objective is to end up with a space between the index and the scale. See “assembly plate” (center spacer) discussed next.

There are also two non-adhesive backed spacers called “assembly plates” (center spacers). Each kit includes (2) 2 mm thick and (2) 3 mm thickness assembly plates. They are used when assembling and installing the ZI-2.2 to ensure a necessary gap between a “scale” (white with printed graph) and an “index plate” (clear w/cross hairs). There are (2) hex-nut (Allen) screws provided to hold the assembly plate between the scale and index plates. Using the included hex-nut screws in the pre-drilled holes in the scale and index plates, gently tighten the assembly with the index plate (cross hairs) on top, the assembly plate (of correct thickness) in the middle and the scale on the bottom. The kit contains a hex-nut wrench (hex key) which is used to tighten the screws for the precise alignment of the index cross in the zero position in relation to the scale. The same hex–nut wrench (hex key) can be used to remove the screws holding the assembly plate (center spacer) from the center space once the assembly is properly installed. If installed correctly, a gap between the scale and index plates should remain after the assembly plate is removed. This will then show your graph target in the center “zero” vertical and horizontal positions and allow quick visual reference in monitoring any crack shift in the wall. Precision measurements can be taken between the two factory installed reference pins using a calipers and recording the measurements.

When the ZI-2.2 is ready to be fixed we can start fixing it on the construction. In this video we will show the combined method of installing with the help of assembly glue and wall anchors. The installation using wall anchors is the most preferable method when affixing the ZI-2.2 outdoors. This method allows the reuse of the gauges and removing them without any damage when the monitoring is over. However, if the gauge is fixed only with wall anchors, tampering can change its measurements by shifting the plates. To avoid such tampering and to accomplish a precise attachment on uneven surfaces, epoxy or assembly glue is used.

Every ZI – 2.2 kit includes a hole marking template for wall anchor fixing. After holes are drilled into the mounting surface, insert the wall anchors. Then epoxy or assembly glue is applied to the back side of Z1-2.2 mounting hole area. The assembled gauge is then screwed to the anchors. Security screws (such as Torx) can also be used to deter tampering. When fastening use caution not to over-tighten. It is sufficient to reach a contact between the head of the anchor and the gauge. If you over-torque the screws, the gauge can change its position after the removal of assembly screws. Wall mounting hardware and adhesives are not included.

If only assembly glue is used for the affixing of the gauge, there is an opportunity to choose the brand of glue which is suitable for using at a subzero temperature (the glue ‘Moment’ (Henkel, momentary adhesion) is used in the video). In contrast to epoxy glue, assembly glue is ready for using and it doesn’t need the temporary fixing of the gauge for the period of glue adhesion. After adhesion assembly glue has a free period of time during which it is possible to change the position of the plates of the ZI-2.2 gauge and align it.

When glue reaches the required strength and bonding ceases to be moving the assembly screws can be removed and it is necessary to measure the distance between the reference points of the gauge for crack monitoring.
